Sodium carrageenan
Sodium Carrageenan (INCI: Sodium Carrageenan) is a polysaccharide of plant origin, extracted from red algae, then processed via chemical synthesis. It fulfills several roles in cosmetic formulations: thickening agent, emulsifier, film-forming agent, antistatic agent, and binder, particularly in hair care products.
Roles & functions
Hair conditioning — Improves the appearance, softness and manageability of the hair.
Emulsifying — Allows phases that do not naturally mix, such as water and oil, to be blended together.
Viscosity controlling — Increases viscosity and gives the product its texture.
Film forming — Forms a film on the surface of the skin or hair.
Antistatic — Reduces static electricity, particularly on the hair.
Binding — Binds together the ingredients of a solid formula (powder, stick).
