Microcrystalline cellulose (INCI: MICROCRYSTALLINE CELLULOSE) is a cellulose derivative of plant origin obtained through chemical synthesis. It fulfills several roles in cosmetic formulations: thickening agent, emulsifier, opacifying agent, and abrasive.

Roles & functions
Perfuming — Adds a scent to the product or masks the odour of raw materials.
Emulsifying — Allows phases that do not naturally mix, such as water and oil, to be blended together.
Viscosity controlling — Increases viscosity and gives the product its texture.
Abrasive — Helps remove particles through friction (polishing, scrubbing).
Opacifying — Makes the product less transparent.
