Denatured alcohol
Denatured ethanol (INCI: Alcohol Denat.) is an alcohol of plant or synthetic origin to which bitter substances have been added to make it unfit for consumption. In a cosmetic formulation, it plays several roles: solvent that helps dissolve ingredients, preservative that limits microbial proliferation, astringent that tightens pores, and contributes to foam formation and product thickening.
Roles & functions
Perfuming — Adds a scent to the product or masks the odour of raw materials.
Foaming — Creates or stabilises the foam of a product.
Viscosity controlling — Increases viscosity and gives the product its texture.
Preservative — Limits the growth of micro-organisms to preserve the product.
Solvent — Dissolves other ingredients to incorporate them into the formula.
Astringent — Temporarily tightens the skin or the pores.
